Enlightenment, Age of
   This term (derived from Old English, meaning "to remove blindness") refers to a movement that began in the seventeenth century: the followers of the Enlightenment considered human reason as supreme in the acquisition and development of knowledge and so questioned both the possibility of Revelation and the teachings of theChurch.
